Bringing Polo Back to Charlotte

This next chapter brings it back with purpose and long-term vision.

Reestablishing the Tradition

Charlotte Polo Club is rooted in the belief that polo belongs in Charlotte. Not as a reflection of the past, but as something active, visible, and growing. The goal is to build a lasting foundation for the sport—one that supports participation, develops the local community, and creates a place for polo to thrive again. What existed here before matters. What comes next matters more. This is about restoring that legacy and building something meant to endure.

Charlotte Polo History

1923

A Club Takes Shape

The original Charlotte Polo Club was founded in September 1923, marking the beginning of a polo presence in the city.

1923–1935

Polo Takes Off

Archival references suggest the club was active and well-attended during this period, as polo gained popularity across the American South. Matches served for both competition and social events, connecting Charlotte to a growing regional network of clubs. During these years, polo held a visible place in the city.

1935

Polo Fades from the City

A 1935 postcard shows an aerial view of the Charlotte Polo Club field near Queens Road West and Selwyn Avenue, preserving a visual record of the club’s presence. In the years that followed, Charlotte’s growth brought new development pressures, and the land was gradually repurposed—leading to the club’s decline and the loss of polo in the city.

Now

Polo Returns to Charlotte

In recent years, polo has returned to Charlotte. What started as a small effort to reconnect players has grown into an active community, with a core group now playing and training regularly. The next step is establishing a permanent foundation—through land, partnerships, and long-term structure.
